DIY Farmhouse Table

When we first moved into our home last October, we bought a $60 Solid Oak Table from Craigslist to use as a dining room table.  We liked how big it was and how cheap it was too.  Unfortunately, oak isn't all the rage right now so I have been meaning to this entire time to redo it.  I am very much in love with the FarmTable look and even toyed with the idea of making a table from scratch or buying one that was already stained and beautiful.  Well, I love my husband enough to not make him make me one and I don't think our budget allows a brand new table.

We started by using an electric sander and sanded down the entire table.  The top had a few coats of varnish on it so we had to sand several times to get that off which was a little tricky.  Once we did that, I scrubbed it clean and let it dry.

Once dry, we put on one coat of stain.  We used Dark Walnut from Minwax purchased at Home Depot. I chose this color because I wanted something dark and rich, plus it matches my dining chairs.  I painted the legs of the table 2 coats of a bright white.  Once that dried we stained the table again and actually left it on over night.  I am not sure if this is something you should do, but since it was so hard to get the previous coats off, this did the trick in really letting the stain soak in.  The next morning, I scrubbed the residue of the left over stain off and then sprayed on Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane.  We put on several coats before actually using the table again to really let it dry and seal the stain.  Overall, I am very pleased with how this project turned out and am so much more in love with my table than before.  Family dinner is very important to us so we will get a lot of use out of this table.  For those wondering, my dining chairs were purchased from Overstock.com and really love them as well.
